George R.R. Martin releasing another “A Song of Ice and Fire” Novella: The Princess and the Queen

Nirdy Fal and I are HUGE A Song of Ice and Fire fans – one look at our Twitter feed whenever HBO is airing their on-screen adaptation of this epic saga proves as much (so many complaints!) – and as such we’re anxiously awaiting the sixth book in the series, Winds of Winter.

As far as I know, no one knows when GRRM will release the next chapter of the trials and tribulations of the denizens of Westeros and Essos, but we get teasers every now and again, the latest giving us a glimpse into Arianne‘s journey north to discover if her cousin and a (possible) Targaryen heir to the Iron Throne truly exists.

So imagine my amazement to see that Mr. Martin has taken precious time away from completing Winds of Winter to write another novella to accompany his A Song of Ice and Fire saga. He’s already written three, each belonging to the Tales of Dunk and Egg series – The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight – with more to come. According to Tor.com, however, GRRM has detoured from that series to write another novella – The Princess and the Queen – which isĀ still related to Ice and Fire, but focusing on the “Dance of Dragons”, or the Targaryen civil war that started it all. It will be included in the anthology Dangerous Women, edited by himself andĀ Gardner Dozois.

Look, I appreciate the back story of some of my favorite characters and scenarios as much as the next Ice and Fire fan, but I can think of six things GRMM could be doing instead of writing supplemental material to Ice and Fire:

  1. Finishing Winds of Winter
  2. Being done writing Winds of Winter
  3. Completing Winds of Winter
  4. Ceasing work on Winds of Winter
  5. Bringing his work on Winds of Winter to an end
  6. Finishing Winds of Winter

It’s all about budgeting your time and setting your priorities, GRRM, but you’ll find that if you stop working on novellas and follow my simple suggestions above, you’ll be finished with Winds of Winter in no time.
